The Ex Tiles: How to Replace the Old with the New
Bathroom remodeling all boils down to the type of tiles you need. They’re the kind of materials that are waterproof, slip-proof, and conducive to the surrounding temperature. And yet, this seemingly simple task can get way more complicated due to the thousands upon thousands of tile designs available in the market today, each one bringing a different vibe to your bathroom: retro, classic, neoclassical, post-modern, and so on.
Just how should you replace your old tiles with new ones for bathroom remodeling or pick new tiles for brand new toiletries? This how-to guide should help.
Check Your Bathroom’s Floor Size
Your toiletry space will determine what kind of tiles you need. Is the floor space a bit cramped and can fit only one to two people at a time? Then get tiles measuring the minimum 1-inches by 1-inches.
If the floor area fits more than two people, you can choose from 5-inch tiles up to 12-inch tiles or even large-format tiles that come in customizable shapes according to your bathroom size.
Note: Large-format tiles are not connected by grout and look more visually appealing.
Also, Check Your Bathroom’s Other Dimensions
Floor space isn’t just the only factor to consider with tiles. There’re the walls and shower floor, too! Bathroom remodeling concerns those areas, too, so they’re protected from water damage.
Their tile sizes are dependent on the floor area as well. If they’re small, 1-inch tiles are the bare minimum for small shower floors and walls. When they’re big, you can start as low as 4-inch tiles up to 15-inch by 30-inch squares!
Accent When Possible
The first two tips are general rules of thumb if you’re new to bathroom remodeling. However, if this isn’t your first time with reconstruction, you can play around with accents. For instance, if your shower wall is full of cream tiles, you can accent them with hazelnut-colored blocks for a uniform look. Or you can reverse the colors for more of a stark contrast if that’s what you’re into, which leads us to
Choose Appropriate Colors and Materials
Appropriate colors are a must, especially if you’re doing bathroom remodeling for public-use toiletries. If it’s a common area that even kids will use, choose simple primary colors such as shades of blue, red, or yellow—no expensive tiles are needed here, too.
If it’s a bathroom for personal use, you can get pricier tiles that are more durable and suited to your tastes. If you’re into glazed squares or ornament-like wall tiles, feel free to use them. It’s your bathroom anyway!
Let Your Creativity Show
Tiles don’t just come in squares, mind you. They are also available in rectangle variants! These two configurations allow you to play around with the overall design if you’re the creative type!
For instance, you can create a halo effect on the shower wall with the middle composed of brown rectangles and the outer portions filled with square green tiles!
You can also mix tile sizes against different portions–the wall can have 1-inch tiles while the floor tile can be 4-inches wide!
You can also mix tiles half-and-half; the lower half of the bathroom wall can be made up of creme tiles, while the upper half of dark green copper tiles for a more relaxing, nature-like feel. The design possibilities with tiles are endless!
The Truth (of Your Tiles) Is Out There
Aside from the practical sizing guide in the earlier tips, replacing your old tiles with new ones is all up to your imagination. We’d first recommend consulting with an interior designer and tile setters to determine the layout you want to see how practical it is. From there, you all can find the best approach to turn your design dreams into reality.
